Football Saturday In The South will return from its winter layoff in early August. When we begin our third season, we'll be back here at our familiar site. We are no longer affiliated with AOL Sports. They decided to go another direction and quit covering individual schools on a daily basis.

That means a return home for us. We look forward to getting back here at FSITS and previewing the upcoming season. It should be an interesting one. Athlons and Lindy's have hit the newsstands and pick the Tigers in the lower half of the top 25. I can't say I blame them with road trips to LSU, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia on the schedule. But you can bet Tommy Tuberville will have Auburn ready by early September.

Saturday Brings Another Installment of All Auburn, All Orange

Undoubtedly by now you've seen the emails and announcements proclaiming Saturday night's game with Florida an "All Auburn, All Orange" game. Is that really necessary? Maybe I'm missing something but I've been to virtually every home game since Tommy Tuberville made his plea for fans to wear orange and I'd have to say that 99.9% of the stadium is in orange - for better or worse.

Former Auburn running back Carnell Williams had his best day of the season this week, rushing for 111 yards on 20 carries in Tampa Bay's 24-21 loss to New Orleans. Williams has struggled this year along with his team. Sunday's performance was his first 100 yard game of the season. His counterpart at Auburn also is struggling. Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown picked up only 39 yards on 17 carries in a loss to New England. On a bright note, Brown did score his third touchdown of the season.

Rumors are circulating around internet message boards today that ESPN's College GameDay is headed to Auburn this weekend. Most had assumed that Auburn's 27-10 loss to Arkansas on Saturday all but eliminated the Tigers from consideration. Two weeks ago during the pre-game radio broadcast of the South Carolina game, GameDay host Kirk Herbstreit hinted that they were headed to Auburn Saturday.

Auburn Drops To 10th In Coaches; 11th In AP

Auburn's meltdown Saturday afternoon against Arkansas costs them nine spots in the AP poll and seven spots in the Coaches Poll. Surprisingly, the Tigers only dropped to 10th in the Coaches poll after previously being third. It was much worse with the writer's. Auburn dropped out of the top 10 in the AP Poll for the first time this season, falling all the way to number 11.

Auburn Ranks High in Number of Players on NFL Rosters

A report released on Thursday shows that Auburn ranks 11th nationally in the total number of former players now in the NFL. The Tigers currently have 27 former players on active NFL team rosters. Miami (Fla.) leads the way with 42. The SEC is well represented with five teams in the top 11. Tennessee leads the conference with 40 followed by Georgia (39), Florida (35), LSU (31) and then Auburn. In case you were wondering, Alabama has 19 in the NFL, just a few less than the number of players they still pay in Tuscaloosa today.

Hot Shot Quarterback Gets First Real Road Test At Auburn

When Arkansas visits Auburn on Saturday all eyes will be on Razorback freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain. The Springdale, Arkansas native was a Parade Magazine All-American and its Player of the Year in 2005. He was at the top of every recruiting analysis list. Arkansas coach Houston Nutt laid it all on the line in luring Mustain to Fayetteville. He even went so far as to hire Mustain's high school coach as the Razorbacks new offensive coordinator.

The first Harris Interactive Poll was released Sunday and to almost no ones surprise, Auburn comes in at third nationally behind Ohio State and Southern Cal. The Trojans lead the Tigers by 22 votes in the weekly poll. The Harris Interactive Poll is one of the components in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings that determine who plays for the national championship. Also included as part of the BCS formula is the Coaches poll (Auburn is currently ranked third) and the average of six computer rankings.

Thank God it was only Buffalo. Auburn suffered through its biggest hangover in recent memory Saturday in front of an announced crowd of 84,000 people - I think they meant to say yawns. The late arriving crowd was in sync with the Tigers late arriving team. Auburn was clearly a group that was tired, beat up and not ready to play so soon after last week's thrilling win over LSU. Still, yesteday's 38-7 win over Buffalo served its purpose.

Auburn's game Saturday at Mississippi State made you feel good all over. Bradon Cox overcame a somewhat slow start against Washington State last week to post a solid performance over the Bulldogs. Throwing for 249 yards, it was his third best outing as a Tiger. John Vaughn got into the right mindset for LSU by connecting on a 55 yard field goal. And Courtney Taylor looked like he did in 2004, having the best day of his career statistically.

A lot of people never knew that Erk Russell was an Auburn man. A good Auburn man. He was the school's last four-sport letterman. All of you have heard by now of his death in Statesboro, Georgia, on Friday. College football can be a strange thing. It's still hard to understand sometimes how two of Auburn's most storied players, Vince Dooley and Russell, became to mean so much to Georgia athletics. While all the media attention continues to be on Notre Dame's Brady Quinn and Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson, Auburn running back Kenny Irons is taking care of business on the field. Saturday night in the Tigers 40-14 romp over Washington State, Irons rushed for 183 yards and a touchdown in the win. On Monday, Irons was named the SEC's Offensive Player of the Week.

Go 2 Guy Changes Tune

Last night when I posted the column from Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist Jim Moore, the response was incredible. FSITS had more than a 1,000 hits in just over an hour. Many of you took matters into your own hands and decided to drop Mr. Moore "a note".

Today he responded. And boy did his tune change. He couldn't say enough about the hospitality of the Auburn people. While not completely losing his sarcasm, he did try to make up with the Auburn people in his own way.

I have to give him credit for addressing the emails. He could have easily ignored us and no one in the Northwest would have known about the reaction he got. Do I like him anymore than I did yesterday. Nope. But deep down I have a feeling he knows he was a jerk.

So in the spirit of Auburn, I forgive you Jim. As for my readers who "gave Jim a ring," I have tears in my eyes. You make me proud. It's great to be an Auburn Tiger.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time all the talk at Auburn was about whether quarterback Brandon Cox could fill the shoes of departed SEC Player of the Year, Jason Campbell.
